چکیده
IN ORDER TO COMPARE CONCEPTS OF MEANING SIMILARITY OF ENGLISH AND NAVAHO BILINGUALS, AN EXPERIMENT WAS CONDUCTED IN NORTHERN ARIZONA WITH 57 NAVAHO EIGHTH GRADERS. THEY WERE CLASSIFIED AS EITHER "COMPOUND" OR "COORDINATE" BILINGUALS ACCORDING TO WHETHER THEY HAD ASSIMILATED TWO LANGUAGES IN ASSOCIATED CONTEXTS OR IN DISSOCIATED CONTEXTS. THE STUDY'WAS DESIGNED TO INVESTIGATE THE SCOPE OF SEMANTIC DISTANCES AMONG MONOLINGUALS, COMPOUND BILINGUALS, AND COORDINATED BILINGUALS, AND TO DETERMINE THE DEGREES or POLARITY. THE SUBJECTS WERE TESTED AND RATED ON THEIR REACTIONS TO FOUR COMMON CONCEPTS-FATHER, HOME, FOOD, AND ME. ONLY THE SECOND OF TWO PROPOSED HYPOTHESES WAS SUPPORTED, AND FAILURE FOR THE. FIRST WAS PERHAPS DUE TO SUBTLE DIFFERENCES IN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY WHICH THE RESEARCH PROCEDURE DID NOT PICK UP. THE

Learning Indonesian-Chinese Lexicon with Bilingual Word Embedding Models and Monolingual Signals
We present a research on learning Indonesian-Chinese bilingual lexicon using monolingual word embedding and bilingual seed lexicons to build shared bilingual word embedding space. We take the first attempt to examine the impact of different monolingual signals for the choice of seed lexicons on the model performance. We found that although monolingual signals alone do not seem to outperform sig...
متن کاملMetalinguistic Awareness and Bilingual vs. Monolingual EFL Learners: Evidence from a Diagonal Bilingual Context
This paper reports a study of 85 Iranian EFL learners in the English Language Department of Urmia University. It explores the possible differences between performance of 38 Persian monolingual and 47 Turkish-Persian bilingual EFL learners on metalinguistic tasks of ungrammatical structures and translation. The underlying hypothesis is that bilinguals in diagonal bilingual contexts experience a ...
متن کاملERP-pupil size correlations reveal how bilingualism enhances cognitive flexibility.
A bilingual upbringing has been shown to enhance executive control, but the neural mechanisms underpinning such effect are essentially unknown. Here, we investigated whether monolingual and bilingual toddlers differ in semantic processing efficiency and their allocation of attention to expected and unexpected visual stimuli. We simultaneously recorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and p...
متن کاملInvestigating Linguistic Relativity Through Bilingualism
The authors investigated linguistic relativity effects by examining the semantic effects of grammatical gender (present in Italian but absent in English) in fluent bilingual speakers as compared with monolingual speakers. In an error-induction experiment, they used responses by monolingual speakers to establish a baseline for bilingual speakers and show that gender affects the semantic substitu...
متن کاملBilingualism and increased attention to speech: Evidence from event-related potentials
A number of studies have shown that from an early age, bilinguals outperform their monolingual peers on executive control tasks. We previously found that bilingual children and adults also display greater attention to unexpected language switches within speech. Here, we investigated the effect of a bilingual upbringing on speech perception in one language. We recorded monolingual and bilingual ...
